Former Eugene police union president found fatally shot in apparent suicide in north Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. — A Lane County sheriff’s spokesman says a man found fatally shot near church property in north Eugene was a former Eugene police union president.

The Register-Guard reports that a police sergeant identified the man who died Tuesday as Erik Humphrey, age 44, and it appears to have been the result of an apparent suicide.

Police Chief Pete Kerns said Humphrey worked 20 years as a community service officer in Eugene. The chief called him a “kind, gentle and conscientious man.”

Lane County sheriff’s officials are investigating the death. They have declined to release details.

The Register-Guard reported that Humphrey died shortly after medics transported him to a local hospital.

He served several years as president of the Eugene Police Employees Association, which represents more than 200 police department employees. His tenure as the union’s head ended just a few months ago.
