Central Oregon entered the final weekend of July under a sky filled with smoke, flashing emergency alerts and the unsettling knowledge that several dangerous wildfires were growing at the same time. By Monday morning, more than 34 large fires were active across Oregon. Together, they had burned more than 1 million acres, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.
