Warning issued for windstorm Sunday afternoon; heaviest winds expected after 2 p.m.

Spokane County Emergency Management issued a warning Sunday in advance of expected destructive winds that will reach their peak in the afternoon.

The National Weather Service is forecasting gusts of up to 70 miles per hour from the southwest starting around 2 p.m. and lasting through the evening. Public safety agencies are encouraging people to stay inside during the height of the storm, which could blow down trees and create visibility problems, especially in the Columbia Basin. 

The wind will bring a chance of rain in the area Sunday evening that will switch to snow in upper elevations, the National Weather Service said.
