After the late David Bowie caught a set of the saxophonist’s art-rock-meets-avant-jazz quartet, he enlisted them to be his band on his final album, the exquisite Blackstar. Now the New York group has released its own new album, Beyond Now its dramatic, experimental sonics inspired by the Bowie project.

Members of this Brooklyn group were in their teens when they made their Fat Possum debut, the exuberant Human Ceremony. But we’re told their parents were into great music, and it has evidently rubbed off. Singer bassist Julia Cumming has a Debra Harry vibe as tracks veer from psyche metal to fuzzed-out Beach Boys.
