A 34-year-old Sequim man accused of killing two Clallam County rapists showed a “particular animus” toward sex offenders, authorities there say.

Clallam County deputies arrested accused killer Patrick Drum on Sunday, hours after two registered sex offenders were found killed. Investigators contend Drum killed Jerry Wayne Ray, 56, and Gary Lee Blanton, 28, early Sunday in separate planned attacks.

At 8:30 a.m., deputies and paramedics were dispatched to a home on Heuhslein Road in Port Angeles, were Ray was found dead. The child rapist had been shot to death.

Around the same time, deputies received a report of a suspicious person near a home off Blue Mountain Road, located between Sequim and Port Angeles.

According to a Sheriff’s Office statement, deputies found a note in the car connecting Drum to Ray’s killing. Officers with several agencies searched the area for 3 ½ hours, ultimately arresting Drum.

While the search was ongoing, Sequim officers went to Drum’s home. There they found Blanton – who’d recently begun renting a room from Drum – shot to death inside the house.

“Both victims were registered sex offenders and evidence at both crime scenes indicated that Drum had a particular animus toward sex offenders,” a Clallam County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson noted that Drum knew both men personally prior to the killings. Investigators did not say what evidence they believe shows Drum targeted the men because of their past crimes.

Registration documents show Blanton was convicted of third-degree rape in 2001. Ray was previously convicted of first-degree rape of a child.

Drum remains jailed as the investigation continues.
