Man dies after flipping car off U.S. 26 south of Madras

A man driving west on U.S. 26 south of Madras on Sunday morning died after he veered into the shoulder, over-corrected and flipped his sports-utility vehicle off the highway, according to Oregon State Police.

The driver’s name has not been released as troopers notify his family.

State troopers are investigating the crash that occurred around 7:12 a.m. about one mile from Oregon 97. A preliminary investigation reported that the driver struck a culvert and went airborne as he attempted to gain control of his vehicle. The vehicle landed upside-down about 35 yards off the highway, hidden in high bushes.

The owner of the property where the vehicle landed didn’t hear the crash but saw the vehicle after he awoke, according to police reports.
