Waymo’s self-driving cars are set to begin mapping Portland with support from Mayor Keith Wilson, aiming to enhance road safety despite past controversies.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Self-driving Waymo cars are coming to Portland starting Tuesday.
Waymo plans to begin mapping the city — first with human drivers at the wheel — in the company’s new Ojai fleet. Its launch has received backing from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, who says the autonomous cars will help meet the city’s “Vision Zero” goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
