S&P/TSX composite up, U.S. stock markets mixed in late-morning trading

TORONTO — Strength in the technology and base metal sectors helped Canada’s main stock index climb higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 29.12 points at 34,441.17.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 25.01 points at 50,619.27. The S&P 500 index was up 35.78 points at 7,556.14, while the Nasdaq composite was up 167.74 points at 26,842.47.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.44 cents US compared with 72.30 cents US on Wednesday.

The July crude oil contract was up US$1.01 at US$89.69 per barrel.

The August gold contract was up US$21.50 at US$4,503.00 an ounce.
