S&P/TSX composite up more than 250 points, U.S. stock markets also higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up more than 250 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metal, technology and energy sectors, while U.S. stock markets also pushed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 267.01 points at 34,680.46, regaining some of the more than 800 points lost on Friday.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 144.83 points at 51,011.61. The S&P 500 index was up 75.22 points at 7,458.96, while the Nasdaq composite was up 453.10 points at 26,162.53.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.71 cents US compared with 71.82 cents US on Friday.
