Importers and their customs brokers started applying for tariff refunds through an online portal this week.
PORTLAND, Ore. — The federal government has begun accepting applications for tariff refunds following a Supreme Court ruling striking down President Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, but the relief may not reach the small businesses that absorbed much of the financial pain.
According to Customs and Border Protection in court filings, more than 330,000 importers paid roughly $166 billion in tariffs across 53 million shipments. While those importers and their customs brokers are now eligible to file for refunds, the small businesses that purchased goods from them are not.
