Portland is seeing its biggest protests since 2020. These downtown businesses say they’re loving it

Protests against the Trump administration have drawn some big, hungry crowds downtown, where restaurants are picking up the foot traffic.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Considering the city’s not-so-distant history, Portland’s recent run of major protests are now earning support within an unlikely demographic — downtown businesses.

“I just announced that there’s going to be the August 2 protest on Saturday, and I got back — we have a group chat — and I got back a lot of yays and little celebration things, so people are really excited,” said Lanie Kali, community manager for the Midtown Beer Garden.
