Portland City Council approves $8.5B preliminary budget after 12-hour meeting

Portland City Council approves amendment to divert $2 million in proposed police funding to city parks to cover maintenance costs slashed in mayor’s budget.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland City Council approved a $8.5 billion preliminary budget late Wednesday night following a more than 12-hour meeting that ended just a few minutes before midnight.

Mayor Keith Wilson submitted his budget proposal earlier this month, and city councilors introduced 126 amendments leading up to the marathon budget hearing that kicked off Wednesday morning. Ultimately, councilors approved about two dozen amendments and postponed several major decisions until a later session.
