Oregon sees growing hunger crisis as families struggle to afford basic needs

Oregon Food Bank saw a spike of 2.9 million visits last year, dramatically higher than during the pandemic, with more families struggling with the cost of living.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Demand for food assistance in Oregon is rising sharply as more families struggle with the cost of living.

In an interview on KGW’s “Straight Talk,” Oregon Food Bank President Andrea Williams said visits to its network of food pantries across the state and Southwest Washington have surged in recent years. In its latest “State of Hunger” report, the organization found visits increased by 51% over the past two years, reaching about 2.9 million visits last year.
