The owners of Unger Century Berry Farms in Cornelius believe pickers’ ties to the community and previous experience at the farm helped convince them to take the risk
CORNELIUS, Ore. — A longtime Oregon farming family says they’re breathing a sigh of relief seeing pickers show up for the busy berry season amid growing concerns about immigration enforcement.
Katie Bolton and her cousin Will Unger are fourth generation farmers at Unger Century Berry Farms. Bolton said they were worried at the beginning of the season pickers might be too anxious to come to work due to recent immigration raids involving both legal and illegal foreign workers.
