It’s regarded as a breakthrough treatment for depression — so why are Oregon’s psilocybin centers closing?

The healing power of psychedelics — especially magic mushrooms — has been studied for decades. More recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has heralded it as a breakthrough treatment for depression.

But two years after Oregon opened the nation’s first therapeutic psilocybin center, the promise of America’s first legal “trip” is struggling to fully take flight.

“Flat-out, we have a mental health crisis, and there’s something that can help — and we’re not using it,” said Craig Frank, who co-owns Sacred Mushroom, one of 25 licensed psilocybin treatment centers in the state.
