Foie gras ban passes Portland City Council in 7-5 vote

Portland restaurants serving force-fed foie gras will have six months to transition away under the ordinance passed Thursday.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Editor’s note: This story has been updated with the results of Thursday’s vote.

Portland City Council voted Thursday to ban the sale of force-fed foie gras in the city after a characteristically heated debate.

The ordinance passed in a 7-5 vote, with Councilor Steve Novick joining the six members of the council’s progressive caucus (or “Peacock”) to carry the day.
