There was a time in Oregon when the surest way to start an argument was to ask one simple question: Ducks or Beavers?

Families were divided. Friend groups picked sides. Entire Saturdays in the fall revolved around green and yellow or orange and black. People could spend an afternoon yelling at a television, questioning a referee’s eyesight, and reminding everyone within earshot exactly why their school was better.

And somehow, by Monday morning, life went on.

Looking back now, that kind of division almost feels quaint.
