Early Saturday morning, the Oregon coast woke up to a heavy and sobering sight.
A 46-foot fin whale washed ashore just north of Sunset Beach Recreation Site, near Warrenton, sometime around 6:30 a.m. According to Seaside Aquarium, the whale had actually been on people’s radar for a few days after it was spotted floating offshore near Cape Falcon.
By Saturday morning, it had drifted in and come to rest on the sand.
Right now, there are still more questions than answers. Aquarium staff say the whale’s sex hasn’t been determined, and the cause of death is unknown. A necropsy is being scheduled to hopefully shed some light
