Portland convenience store tries providing free food to deter theft

Just outside Providence Park, Stadium Superette is a family-owned convenience store — and a convenient target for shoplifters.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Out in front of Providence Park along West Burnside Street, Karen Chirre first opened the doors at Stadium Superette six years ago.

“It was my husband’s dream,” said Chirre. “This is truly a family business.”

But the dream has met with the tough reality of running a small business in Portland — especially this part of Portland, in this day and age. The little store deals with thefts at least every month, according to Chirre.
