Cal Skate, a Portland skateboarding icon, has a new owner. Employee-turned-skater Chris Nukala vows to continue its legacy and grow local skate opportunities.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Cal Skate Skateboard, a 50-year-old Portland skateboard shop and community fixture in Old Town, has a new owner.
Chris Nukala took over the business Jan. 1 from founder Howard Weiner, after working at the shop for two decades. The store, now located at Northwest Sixth Avenue and Everett Street, has been a cornerstone of Portland’s skateboarding community since Weiner opened it in 1976 at Second Avenue and Salmon Street.
Nukala’s path from customer to owner comes full circle.
