Justice Department sues Uber for rejecting ride requests from blind passengers with guide dogs

Over the past year, KGW has documented multiple incidents of Uber drivers in the Portland area refusing passengers who are blind and travel with guide dogs.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Department of Justice is suing Uber, alleging the ride-hailing company and its drivers repeatedly discriminated against passengers with disabilities, particularly riders who use service animals.

The federal lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses Uber of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The complaint alleges drivers routinely denied rides, charged unlawful cleaning fees for service animal shedding, and imposed cancellation fees on people who were refused service.
