It’s been called a hidden gem so many times, it might as well be its formal nickname. But we love North Cascades National Park for what it’s not: It’s not easy to get to, it’s not very busy, and it’s not even a simple park.

NCNP is a national park and then some. The top part of our Cascade spine is a patchwork of protected lands—a spread of national park here, a finger of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area land there, and a sliver of hydroelectric dams and powerhouses in the middle known as Ross Lake National
