Paradox Cafe — one of Portland’s oldest vegan diners — closes: ‘Served the final plate’

Paradox Cafe, often referred to as Portland’s first vegan diner, shut its doors due to difficulties sustaining operations after more than 30 years.

PORTLAND, Ore. — One of Portland longest-running vegan restaurants, Paradox Cafe, has closed after more than 33 years.

Paradox, located on Southeast Belmont Street, was often referred to as Portland’s first vegan diner. It recently closed due to difficulties sustaining operations, which the restaurant said has been “intensifying” since the pandemic, according to its website

“Like so many other food service businesses, we can no long sustain operations and have served the final plate,” Paradox said.
