With time running out, supporters of Portland’s James Beard Public Market hope for legislature’s help

The market has a space in downtown Portland and a lot of backing both public and private, but a bill in the legislature hasn’t gone to a vote.

PORTLAND, Ore. — For more than three decades, the James Beard Public Market has been little more than a Portland pipe dream. Now, the pieces are finally falling into place for it to become a reality, but it’s still missing key financial support from the state.

Last year, the foundation behind the public market project bought a huge space for it downtown. However, it still needs a great deal of work before it will be ready for vendors
