The trials are determining the amount of economic damages to be paid out to individuals after the wildfires that killed five and destroyed thousands of homes.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Ten survivors of the 2020 Labor Day wildfires received around $50 million in compensation in the latest damages trial in a nearly 5-year-old class action lawsuit against Portland-based PacifiCorp.
The trial follows a jury verdict in 2023, which held the utility company liable for allegedly causing the fires, partially due to not turning off the power in the face of dangerous conditions. Those wildfires killed five people and destroyed thousands of homes.
