Dow Jones Industrial Average hits new benchmark, tops 17,000

The Dow Jones Industrial Average set a new milestone, passing the 17,000 mark in early Thursday trading. By 10:15 a.m, the Dow was at 17,049.33, up 73 points, or 0.43 percent, buoyed by an upbeat June jobs report as the economy gained 288,000 posts, and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent.

Among a cross-section of Pittsburgh companies, Education Management Corp. realized the biggest gains, up 2.41 percent to $1.70 per share. It is the local stock that dropped the most during the first half of 2014, plunging a whopping 83 percent.
